Full Time: Hull 2 Fulham 1

By: Matt | August 16th, 2008

Caleb Folan slides in the winner in the 81st after good work from Craig Fagan. Both substitutes, Phil Brown is showing that we aren’t here to be this years Derby.

Geovanni was man of the match, great equalizer, worked hard, some lovely tricks as well.

Defense was frail at times but again, this was the first top flight match in our history. We now have won every single match in our Premiership history. Beat that anyone else.

It will be a long and tough road, but couldn’t have asked for a better start.

E-high fives welcome.

Well done Hull. Big result and puts you in a positive frame of mind. Long way to go, but good to see.

Congrats to the Tigers ! There’s no better way to start the season for a newly promoted club than such a win.

Matt – I start our new season with this fact. The most important bit of Tiger trivia ever published even if it has a limited shelf life . Question =
Who are the only club in the history of the old First Division and its successor the Prem to win every game they played in ? But be quick ! (Both Stoke and WBA lost)

We waited 104 years for today and our first goal in the Prem. And wot a gem. I was sat behind it and you could tell it was in the moment it left his boot. Must be the goal of the season, whatever happens. As important as Deano’s at Wembley, particularly as it was against the run of play at that time and it changed the whole game, set up the crowd, and set up the win.

    Hull v Fulham
Matt – So wot do you think of that lads. It would be wrong to single out individuals, but I’m going to. I have to say this =
    1. That’s the best Barmby has played for a long time. More like his old self. You can see why he got so many caps. But we have to give poor Andy Dawson behind him more support – he was left very exposed against a clever attacking midfield, especially in the first half. Perhaps we are simply waiting for Mendy to adjust.
    2. Geovanni is genuine class. He even tried a few tackles and a bit of defending – can’t we get him a UK passport ? With luck he should have had a hat trick. Swartzer’s good save in first 5 mins, then his goal, and the easiest of all laid on by Barmby – that 6 yard miss in front of an open goal. Hope he doesn’t do wot his friend Elano does at Man City and fade as the season goes on. They don’t do cold weather in Brazil.
    3. Marlon King might be a good acquisition, a promising debut in our weakest point. Held the ball up. Linked up. Played like he had something to prove. And he’s not match fit yet ! But the jury is out as he didn’t really threaten much in front of goal. If he plays a Bolton’s Kevin Davies type role with 10 goals a season then OK. Hope he doesn’t find it too hard to succeed in in the Prem like Fagan at Derby.
    4. Geo Boat was magnificent – he never missed a tackle, covered every blade of grass, and made it so easy for Ash to play his own old role alongside him. My doubts about Ash surviving the Prem are fading if this goes on – I expect those 2 to be engaged by Xmas ! They even strung together some nice passes. Not everyone has to be carried off by his own players cos he was too tired to walk off with his broken neck and leg ! ! A serious candidate for Man of Match.

Got lots more to say but my typing finger sore !

    WOT A GAME.
    WOT A WEEK.
AND WE ARE TOP OF THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD.
    AND I WAS THERE !

    Hull 2 v Fulham 1 No it’s Sir P Brown 2 v Hodgson 1

Matt – I think the most important lesson we learnt here is about the management. It looks as though Sir PB has thrown off the dull Bolton tactics employed by his mentor Big Sam. (Toon fans could not wait to get rid of him.) Sir PB is perhaps more flexible, essential if any team is to survive in the Prem. Wot do I mean ?

Look how our tactics in the first half could not cope with their clever passing midfield game. Murphy, Gera, Bully and Sean Davies are all good experienced ball players. After our first 5 min flurry they murdered us. One and two touch football. Good job Zamora is poor in the Prem. We let them dominate and we flattered them. Or if you like we showed too much respect.

And I don’t think the players we have are good enough to play fancy attacking formations.

Sir PB and his team spotted that :
    1. We were giving them too much space (change = close them down more)
    2. When they attacked, they did so all together leaving big gap in front of defence(= play more into that space)
    3. There was no defensive MF, and the above 4 didn’t track back fast enough. (= speed up our play.)
    4. Their defence is weak, except for GK and RB. And unsupported. (= move their defence around more)

    And so on.

So PB changed things round, and we became world beaters. We murdered them, but became tired towards the end, but Forlan’s tap in came just in time and lifted us again. I think the win was mainly down to a change of tactics. Hodgson didn’t bring on his subs in time when we were tired and opening up, and he’s the supposed to be the acknowledged tactician .

I have always said that we (and the UK game) do better when we speed up.

    As I say Brown 2 v Hodgson 1.

DG- certainly glad to hear you were able to be there. Legend start. It’s still a long road, and we won’t get too far ahead of ourselves, but I think we’re entitled to enjoy this one.

Defo agree on the prowess displayed by PB, I think other premiership managers will learn quickly that we can accomplish quite a lot with the limited resources we have, because he is such a good manager. He is very realistic, which inherently makes him quite flexible. Fulham was class in the middle as you say, more pressure equaled less accurate passing in general. Bringing on Fagan, with loads of pace, to harry and chase a tired Konchesky proved to be the winning stroke. Brilliant stuff.

I also like Marlon King as a signing. I would do with 10 goals like you say, but I think he is capable of more. He can battle like Davies, but I think is a more skillful player, and the result will be he scores more wow goals than Davies does, so a haul of 12-14 sounds about right (and would be lovely).

Can’t say enough about Boa and Geo. Pure class. Great start, great goals, great day all around. High five DG, high five.

And thanks to Rob, Houssem, McTalian, Cap123 and any other offside readers who appreciated the massive win. Hopefully we have a few more for you soon!

Matt – TEAM Ratings v Fulham

This is how I think Tigers were rated 1 to 10 on the day. Make 6 a decent average sound game with a few mistakes perhaps. 10 almost impossible. 0 means sent off in first minute after stupid penalty for handball. You all recognise this sort of thing.

    Myhill 6. Gardner 6. Dawson 5. Turner 6. Ricketts 6. Barmby 7. Ash 6. Boateng 7. Geovanni 8. King 6. Garcia 5.

    Subs= Duke. Mendy. Halmosi (62) 6. Marney. Windass Folan (70) 6 Fagan (74) 6

Do you all agree ? For example reluctant to give Dawson only 5 when he had so little support but his foolish yellow clinched it. Fagan would have got 5 but calmly laid on the winner. Geov played well in both halves. Boat nearly got 8 – no problem if you think he was Man of Match. Garcia not involved enough for me.

Can somebody take over for the next 2 games ? Thanks.

Hey Matt. Really interested in Hull’s foray into the Premier League mainly because of Aussie Richard Garcia. just wanted to find out if hes pretty much a first team regular, and what the fans think of him as a player. People are only starting to get to know who he is at this stage.

DG- Not sad at all. Although your missus must be very understanding.

Daniel- I’ve always like Garcia as a player. He’s capable of scoring in key moments, he’s good on the ball, and he can certainly pick out a pass in the offensive third. I haven’t run into too many Hull supporters who would have an overly negative opinion at all about him. I was glad to see him called into the Socceroos squad, he should def be able to do a job in the middle of the park for you. I’ll try and profile him at a later date.
