How To Dispel Stereotypes, by Millwall FC ‘Supporters’

By: Matt | January 25th, 2009

When you think of Millwall, what comes to mind? The FA Cup a few years back, when Dennis Wise led them to a final date vs Man United? The film Green Street (Green Street Hooligans for American readers)? Zak Whitbread? For me, its a story from John Harkes’s autobiography, in which he had to outrun three separate pitch invasions by Millwall supporters during a cup tie. I have a feeling that options two and four of the above are closer to what most people have in mind when they think of the Lions.

The Millwall faithful did little to dispel this notion on Saturday, as they battled Hull stewards and police in ugly scenes at the KC. On the pitch, the Tigers defeated their fellow big cat opponents in a nervy 2-0 victory. Off the pitch, the action got hot and heavy, as Millwall supporters ripped seats out, destroyed bathrooms, and vandalized concession areas.

“”There is no place for this kind of mindless hooliganism in football. It is an ugly throwback to a bygone era which most clubs have long since eradicated from their culture.” Paul Duffen, Hull’s chairman said after the match. Sadly for the Lions, the eradication bit hasn’t seemed to have work quite yet. What really is a shame is that this was the most high profile match that the club will play at a minimum for the next year, as they are in League One, so their only relevance this season will be for this debacle. The club and its true fans deserve better than to have to carry the burden of criminals who try to associate themselves with the football team.

Let’s hope they can eventually rid themselves of these sorts of people, and if they can manage to make it to the League One playoffs and a possible date at Wembley, its remembered for something other than clashes with police.

Match and carnage highlights here.

Yes Keiron, the film Green Street was about a fictional West Ham firm, the ‘GSE’, which engaged in various battles with other firms throughout the film, culminating in a final showdown with Millwall’s ‘Bushwhackers’ firm (don’t recall if they were referred to as such in the film). Hence the reference above.

In the film, the Millwall firm is the NGO… in real life they’re a bunch of twats who do their best to ruin football… I’ve become a supporter of Hull this season (aside from my obvious prior loyalties) and I was thrilled they came away the victors despite the antics of a bunch of assholes. Well done Tigers!

And on a completely unrelated note, how has Manucho looked since his transfer? Does he appear at all happy to be playing? I miss having the big fella on our roster…

Well he certainly seemed rusty in his first appearance in the Arsenal match. He has bags of potential tho. Youtube confirms that. He almost seems to me like a less confident Adebayor. While Ade will go at anyone, hit any shot, and generally brims with confidence, Manucho seemed a bit reserved at times (except when he face butted Djourou and got floored). That sort of thing will come in the future though, so look for him to do big things….
