Preseason So Far

By: Matt | July 31st, 2008

So far so g…well, mediocre. As a manager, Phil Brown doesn’t put too much stock in preseason, which can be evidenced by the fact that our stiffest opponent this summer will be Basque side Osasuna.

A few easy wins against non-league competition was followed by a draw with Belgians KV Oostende (love the double O’s), a 3-0 cruise by Chesterfield and then……a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Crewe Alexandra. No that is not a new way of spelling Manchester United. That’s Crewe, of Cheshire erm ‘fame’ who were relegated from League One last season.

Now lets talk about this. Fair play to the Railwaymen for coming out and giving us a bollocking from the word go. But seriously. Bernard Mendy. What are you doing mate.

Lets review his first half contribution:

2 min: Doesn’t clear a back post cross, Calvin Zola buries it, 1-0

3 min: Zola picks up ball 25-30 yards out, entire D backs off, missile into bottom corner, 2-0

15 min: Barmby wins penalty, up steps Monsieur Mendy, saved by Crewe keeper Steve Collis, 2-0

(Now this would be a horrific enough first half, but now it just gets comical)

40 min: Fouls Eugen Bopp in the box, penalty, goal, 3-0

43 min: Fouls Nicky Maynard in the box, pealty, goal, 4-0

45 min: Finds a shovel, digs himself a hole, crawls into it.

You can’t make this stuff up people.

I still stand by my comment that he will be a good signing. Sometimes you just have a bad game. And other times you have the worst 45 minutes in football history. But hey, there is always tomorrow.

Back later for analysis on Hull’s upcoming friendlies with Hearts and Osasuna.

Matt – Like your site. Not sure about Fagan (am being polite as this is my 1st post here), but will be very happy to eat my words if he succeeds.Note all our other new signings were loved by the fans of their respective clubs, and that’s always a good start. Are we playing the Boat and Ash in the same side ?

Matt- I’ve kept Geov in my fantasy league side as he’ll see a lot of the ball but you are worrying me about Mendy and have (temporarily) removed him. But Bolton lads loved him and were sad to see him go. Expect Crewe was a one off. Sure Sir PB and BH will sort him if he needs it. He can do 100m in 10.49 secs – you must have asked his advice for the Bull Run ! Steve Claridge on Setanta said that when he was at Leics under MO’N they were hammered in every preseason game, but went on to win lots including the League Cup thingy when the league proper opened. Keep the faith. I forecast that we would reach Wembley before the 1st game – this season we aim for top half borderline at odds of 8/1 – remember some tipped us for relegation last season !

Hey DG- yeah good pick with Geo on your fantasy team. Deffo right that he will see loads of the ball, and I think he’ll certainly get some big goals for us. If nothing else his passing should be able to create loads more chances then we would have had without him.

In terms of Mr. Mendy I am keeping the faith as you say, because dead right; he has the experience, the class and lets face it, sometimes we just have one of those days. We’ll be happy to have him against the big boys, and the younger lads can look to him and Boa in the crucial moments.

Anthony Gardner from Spurs will also provide some depth at the back.

Now keep those fingers crossed Sir Alex realizes Frazier Campbell could do with 25-30 matches in the Prem rather then reserve team matches with United!

Matt. VV BAD NEWS. Sir Fergie confirmed on Sky News this morning (Sunday) that Fraizer stays at Manu. Copy interview and notes lifted as follows =

“Fraizer’s future is here,” said the United boss.

“We do not have any strikers apart from Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez and Frazier plays in that area.

“He took his goal really well and that won’t do him any harm.

“He is a progressive young player. He is quick and determined and he can do very well in the game.”

Ah well !! Move on. A proven striker must be a priority now. We cant defend for 90 mins every game and survive. We need goals too. Anybody got any ideas ?

Fulham on TV today are offering David Healey, but not sure about him. Kevin Davies at Bolton would be a useful player. But he never gets more than 10 goals a season, and Megson and the fans want him to stay – Hulls offer already rejected but KD is big friend of our ex-Bolton Sir PB – they share a racehorse (not sure that last bit sounds right !)Stoke are chasing a quality striker from Spain at £8m – hijack that !!

    Have we got a plan B ?

Yeah. Tough luck about FC. Woulda loved to have him. Some great quotes out of Duffen how United know we want FC and that’s that, we won’t press them on it, and we’ll be patient. Also how we understand that Davies isn’t going anywhere, Bolton let us know that, so out of respect for them we won’t bid again. Pure class we are. Some of the big boys should take some lessons.

And Plan B? I think my head is starting to hurt. Folan wakes up one morning and has become a scoring machine? Geovanni and Dawson manage to score on every single free kick they take (which still might not be enough!)? Yikes, don’t want to think about it.

Will have something on the Hearts match tomm, being lazy at the moment.

Matt, i see Mendy didn’t get off to the best of starts but can players like Barmby and Windass still cut it at this level? Don’t you worry that the club could become a laughing stock if they struggle badly?

Anyway, best of luck for the season.
