Wanted: Striker

By: Matt | August 7th, 2008

If We Say Please?

So before I send in my CV and some video highlights (I was always a better winger anyway) to the Hull backroom staff, let me ask, does anyone know a striker to lead the line for a Premiership club?

Currently we have the following senior strikers on the books:

- Dean Windass: Legend. Scored the winner in the playoff final. Also about 600 years old. He will score in the Premier League this year, just not many.

- Caleb Folan: Scored 8 goals last year, will need to improve that drastically this season if we’re to avoid the drop. Good targetman, holds it up well, just needs to be sharper in front of goal.

- Craig Fagan: Not even really a striker, more of a winger. Which isn’t good for this list. Loads of pace, can get a cross in, but again, will never score a ton goals.

- Nicky Featherstone: Young lad, will see limited time and have even less impact. One for the future.

So what is the wrong with the above list?

If you answered ‘no Frazier Campbell’, you are correct.

If you answered ‘Everything’ then you only get partial credit. I’m an optimist.

So what to do? Well Campbell is looking less and less likely at this point. Ariza Makukula is also out it seems, as Phil Brown has denied that was ever a possiblity. So if I was in charge, which thankfully I’m not, here would be my suggestions:

Manucho (Manchester United, on loan @ Panathinaikos): Currently unclear on what his situation is. Was on loan at Panathinaikos after the ANC in January, played well. United are currently trying to secure a work permit for him last I heard. If he can get it, then I would be delighted to have him. We’re already proven at blooding United strikers, so why can’t we take him on loan? It would be a good chance for him to get used to the pace of the Premiership, while getting regular match time. If you saw him in the ANC, then you know this guy is pure class.

Ched Evans (Manchester City): The young Welshman has drawn rave reviews in limited action at Eastlands and on loan. I watched him play for only a few minutes against Celtic last night and now I know why. Pacy, strong, and just has that instinct to get into positions to score. May find time hard to come by this season with the likes of Benjani, Jo, Vassel, Boijinov, Caicedo and Sturridge all competing for match time. Would LOVE to have him at the KC.

Other players I’d Like to Have (but might be a bit of a stretch):

Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas)
Theofanis Gekas (Bayer Leverkusen)
Joffre Guerron (Getafe)

So who would YOU like to see lead the line this season for the Tigers?

Yeah, I would take him. Hasn’t gotten the minutes really at Anfield, and is getting a bit older, but I’m sure he could do a job for us. Would gladly have him. Not sure about the gross ponytail though. Does he really look in the mirror in the morning and go ‘Yeah, that’s right, I’m the F’in man’. Probably.

Matt – re Striker. Got my season tickets this week. So the Prem is not a dream after all. We are there. Saw first competitive league match (in Scotland) last Saturday. All is happy. Then we lose 1-0 to Osasuna 2nd team after Stoke draw 2-2 with Osasuna 1st team. Argh ! Getting worried again. We really should have things sorted by now.
Seems we are trying a system of play with 2 pacey wide men (from Halmosi + Fagan + Garcia), Geovanni pulling the strings (what a class player) and a SINGLE TARGET MAN ALONE UP FRONT (was Windass against Osasuna). Hope it was just an experiment or we are certain of a target man. Windass does best when he gets the ball to his feet and target is not his best position – I stop short of saying he is too old and slow for that role. Forlan doesn’t seem to have a taste for the role – not enough bottle.
We have nobody on the books. This is a serious hole that MUST be filled or our stay in the Prem could be embarrassing.
I see Kris Boyd at Rangers is being watched by 2 German clubs so might get back on our radar (hate that saying). Rangers are having a big clearout as they are out of Europe.
But the real issue here is MONEY. Sir PB yesterday was giving the party line = We have a budget and are sticking to it. Who says that budget is adequate ? Dont waste £2m on Meite, put it towards a striker. If you pay peanuts … We cant rely only on a good defence because the lads in the Prem will open it like a tin can. Having watched live ManU, Chelsea, Arsenal, Boro, the Toon, etc last season, I promise you that – we’ve got to score goals. Optimism, fitness, aggression, team spirit, etc we got and are important, but not enough
We are said to be guaranteed about £30m+ this season. Where has that money gone to ? Start looking at £5m+ players. But its all about investors in the club, is it ?

Can Hull survive in the Prem with or without new strikers ? This follows on from my last post. This is a very good article by a Watford fan who analysed what went wrong for them and more importantly, what to do to survive. Interesting. See =

Yes interesting article, although I think it applies more to Stoke City’s situation than our own. For the life of me I can’t see why people still think they have a better chance to stay up then Hull. But enough about that.

I share your anxiety about a striker. It is too late in the day to only have the four I mentioned above. It puts too much pressure on the players you mentioned earlier (Halmosi, Garcia, Fagan) to get forward into scoring positions, and put the ball into the net. But all is not lost.

Just remember how much experience this side has. I think people have been far too quick to write us off, because that just is the easy thing to do. But how about look at the team sheet and see Boateng, Hughes, Asbee, Barmby, Mendy, Windass, etc. These lads won’t come out of the tunnel next weekend fresh faced to English football. The points Graham made in the article all come into play here. They all know and understand the kind of organisation, tactics and fitness needed to get over the finish line. They know how to get the job done, they’ve all done it before.

So back mid-week for the season preview, then off we go!

Matt – Sorry its strikers again. Think I read somewhere that you can only have 2 players on loan, so Gardner and possibly King (?) fills our quota. If so, we must buy before 1st Sept. See this report published Thurs morning that Sir PB after Healey at Fulham -dont know how reliable this is. But DH better than nothing I suppose – http://www.fansfc.com/frontpage/frontpagenews.asp?newsid=188993

Matt = HERE IS THE CHEERFUL BIT !! We must not forget that several teams got into the Prem and did well in their first season. Paticularly Ipswich under Geo Burley – think they finished in the top half dozen. also see Coventry and more recently Reading. I still think there is not all that much of a gap between the bottom half teams, so we have it in our own hands especially if we can organise and find some consistency. Ok, our rivals such as Boro may have several better players, but they are so inconsistent. Also the Toon, etc. So all is not lost by any means.
I now have my away direct tickets sorted by those nice people in the Ticket Office, so I am all set up and ready to go ! Can I wait till Saturday ? Nah ! Here’s hoping for a great season, striker or no striker !

Matt – So Frazier Campbell is returning to Hull on loan after all. God bless ManU. He might be here by Fulham game – if not, Deano will play up front. Marlon King also on loan so Gardners loan from Spurs made permanent so loan quota not exceeded. Best of luck to all Tigers for Saturday and for the season. We can do a Reading or Ipswich. They will soon find out that there are no easy points from us and that we can play. Phew ! Wot a week. Its not going to be like this all season is it ? Enjoy. Just think- a decent win v. Fulham could put us top of the Prem by 5pm !!
